Emma's letter:
Hello, my name
is Emma Jacks. I am 16 and a sophomore at The Classical Academy. Last
year I tried out for my high school basketball team . I made JV but did
not play much. This year I was dropped to the C Squad . I would like to
do run faster and make the JV team next year and maybe even make varsity.
I would like to be a good basketball player. This summer my mom and I
were planning to work out together. Unfortunately, my mom got sick and
had to have brain surgery. Since she will not be able to walk well for
a while we will not be able to get into shape together. I also want to
pick up some good habits and make myself a more fit and healthy person.
This program will help me make a new beginning for myself and help me
to influence the people around me. They will see what I have been able
to do and it may cause them to feel, "if she can do it then we may
be able to do it too. "

Our daughter , Emma Jacks , has stepped up to the challenges our family
has faced this year, as is her form. Ann, my wife and Emma's mother, became
very ill in March . She had a brain hemorrhage that required emergency
surgery. There have been complications and even now that Ann is home she
requires a lot of care. Emma has always risen to any challenge. Even when
she was demoted to the C team, she continued to work and support her coaches
and teammates.
Emma has a problem with her weight. The thing that makes us saddest is
the effect it has on her athletics. We have tried to live a healthier
life, but things just keep happening to derail our plans -, but we want
her to develop a healthy lifestyle. I think if Emma can improve her jumping
and shooting, she can make a large contribution to her team.
Emma wants to letter in basketball to go along with her academic and choir
letters. Her mother and I would see that as a great accomplishment and
believe she can do it, with the proper focus and assistance. We will support
Emma and accompany her to all her workouts and training sessions. I believe
that Emma can benefit greatly from your help and be an inspiration to
the younger girls on the team.
