Pat's letter:
I am a 55-year-old fifth grade teacher and five-year breast cancer survivor.
I want to run the 5K at the Susan G. Komen Race in September and to meet
the Presidential Fitness Challenge requirements f or 11 - year - olds
(heck, maybe I could also meet the goals for a 55-year-old women while
I’m at it).
I feel i f I can work toward these goals, I can inspire my students to
become more active and meet them as well. This year I had only four students
out of 26 accomplish this goal. I would like to increase this number next
year.
We only have physical education classes once every four days and about
a half -hour of recess each day. I hope to learn some games and activities
tp teach my students so they can become more active and have fun, too.
I want to learn ways to make exercise fun, so I’ll be sure to continue
improving my fitness level beyond the end of the challenge.
I also want to learn how to improve my flexibility, endurance and basic
fitness levels. I have never been athletic, but I don’t want to
go into old age unable to keep up with my 4-year-old granddaughter. When
I tried to run with the Landsharks (our student running program), I was
afraid to run because I don’t know how to do it safely. I’m
too young to feel old.
I have walked in the Komen Race. I would like to be up front with the
“big girls” – survivors who can run the 5K. It’s
important to me to show that I have regained my mobility and competence
and that the cancer treatment didn’t cause me permanent limitations.
