Tim's letter:
In many regards, I am in great shape for a 46 - year - old. My body fat is around 10 percent. I competed in my first half ironman last October, and finished in 5:05 - good enough to qualify for the national half ironman. I can name all the men over 45 in this city who can run faster than me for any distance over a couple of miles. I swim faster than most triathletes my age, and I lift weights regularly , so I am not a 98 - pound weakling.
My goal is to compete in the 5430 half iron man in Boulder this August, and qualify for the national half ironman. I have a triathlon coach who can help me run, swim and bike, but I need some help in ways that may challenge you. First, I am about as flexible as a 2x4. I can't move as required to swim well, and my arches and calves cramp regularly in the pool.

My lack of ankle flexibility and tight hamstrings and quads make my kick truly pathetic; anything that floats will pass me using a kickboard. I have five kids and an often demanding job, so a yoga class just isn't going to happen.

I also need more lower leg strength for the bike. No impartial judge would say I have calves. (My upper body strength is not bad, but vanity drives me to want a chest.) I have an as - yet - undiagnosed back problem which makes me fear squats and even leg press machines. I travel , so I need exercises I can do on the road to build leg strength and keep me in bike riding shape.
